I am planning a pre-wedding party for 100 people and
I am looking for "Chicago" food ideas and restaurants
that may cater or good caterers to help me with my theme.
Most of our guests will be coming from out of town and
this will be their first visit to Chicago. I'm thinking obvious
pizza and hot dogs? Any other ideas?
    Thanks. Beth

How about catering by Nuevo Leon... Can't get more chicago than Mexican food... I've heard from a Mexican-American friend that they do a good job...

If you're looking for cliche Chicago, then Eli's Cheesecake World might fit the bill. Eli's has somewhat of a national reputation, and they have a function room (actually, the fromt part of the factory) that they rent out to groups. Catering as well as tours of the plant can be arranged. http://www.elischeesecake.com/indexabout.htm

One of the more techno-savy mods (not me ) may move this post, or ask you to re-post, since this is more of a non-food chat item.

In the meantime, see my recs for wedding food in this post

My congratulations to you as well.

A very fun wedding was held for my college roommate in New Orleans, all small plate stations. He explained that was the way most weddings were done down there....the rehearsal dinner was at her parent's poolside, fun, intimate, homey and low cost.

    Hi,

I would offer as gifts to your guests a bag of Garrett popcorn, preferably mixed: cheese, caramel and plain.

I know of someone who provided these for their daughter's rehearsal dinner. They asked months in advance and told to call closer to the date. When they ordered closer to the date, then told they hadn't called with enough time. They finally just went to the shop where they were limited to X quantity per person. In the end, they asked strangers on the street to go into the shop to do their bidding.

I guess a year ago, I would have suggested Fannie Mae Candy. Oh well.
