When I was a kid, there was a place on Skokie Blvd and Lincoln called Elliott's Pine Log Inn. A rib joint IIRC (Same owners as the present Elliott's in Edison Park). Whenever we would be out with my Dad running errands, my brother and I would spend hours asking my Dad, "How far is Elliott's pine log inn?" and then cracking up hysterically. I can only imagine how annoying we were, now that I have witnessed kids asking the same thing over and over again now that I am fully growed.

mozzarella sticks, except formed into flattened spheres (thick disks).

the ones i've had have been battered, not breaded as mozz sticks are.

I might have to try making some tonight. I'm assuming a beer batter - right?

I'm not sure. The version I had most recently wasn't a beer batter i don't think, but I doubt it would hurt.
