There are a number of reasons that someone may choose to favor locally-produced foods in their diet: taste, environmental impact, local economic support, food safety issues, and more. Until now, there hasn't been a source available to all these audiences that takes a practical approach towards eating local produce/meat/dairy/etc.
My latest project,
The Local Beet, aims to be the premiere resource for local eating in and around Chicago. Currently, we are in soft-launch mode with a feature interview by David Hammond as well as a few blog entries from our "locavore on the street" Rob Gardner (aka Vital Information).
Over the next four to six months we will be introducing more features and blogs from other writers, local food professionals (including one chef), and passionate locavores. Also, we're working on shopping guides, maps, and other resources designed to help people find, buy, and eat locally-produced foods.
This is very much still a work-in-progress. I hope if you have any interest in this topic, you'll stick with us over the next year or so as we grow this into something valuable.
Best,
Michael
