I woke this morning to the very sad news that Bom Bon Bakery burned down last night in a massive fire. http://cbs2chicago.com/local/fire.three.alarm.2.792281.html

This is sad news indeed. I hope they bounce back. Easily my favorite cake bakery in town.

I'm astounded at the number of top-notch eateries that have burned down in the past 5 years or so:

    Bom Bon
    Sabri Nehari
    Khan BBQ
    City Noor
    Hot Doug's

    Best,

I've often thought that too. Don't crappy places ever burn?

Very sad, especially as my season of cake approaches. I wish them the best and a speedy recovery.

Since we're right around the corner, we walked past this afternoon to survey the damage. Bombon's building is totally gutted as is the jewelry store/apartments next door. In addition, while it didn't look like it suffered much damage Take Me Out(yum, crispy wings) was closed. The fire is still smoldering and I'm sure there is some concern of building collapse so hopefully they were not affected.

Thanks for the update, Molly. When I heard the news this morning, I thought of Fig first and ran to double-check your address. What happened is very sad, but I'm glad no one was seriously injured.

Yeah, it's pretty severe. Take me out looks unharmed, but as molly said, is closed.

I'm kind of hoping Bombon reopens in a new location as a combo bakery/cafe. Maybe a little closer to the pink line stop ;)

Isn't the La Villita branch of Bombon still open? Or did they do all their baking at the Pilsen location?

Okay, I'll answer my own question. Bombon is still open on 26th Street. It now shares the space with Alessandra Bridal. They still have the same beautiful cakes and pastries but this location has no seating. Laura and Luis are hopeful that the Pilsen shop will reopen someday but it doesn't seem like it will be any time soon.

The Loop location of Bombon Café is closed, of course, but the same menu of great tortas etc is available at the West Loop restaurant.

The 1000 N. Clark location is still open as well, although I preferred 170 W. Washington's tortas and soups. But alas, 1000 N. Clark is the closest and most convenient to my work...

The Gold Coast location is not the same as the others. It's called Bombon Americano and rather unexciting in my opinion. I'd much rather have the tortas and soups, not twists on turkey sandwiches and such.

I agree. I feel guilty buying morning pastries from Whole Foods rather than this family-owned independent bakery down the street.

I've only eaten lunch at the Gold Coast location once, and it was decent but by no means blew me away. It's a shame since the other locations are not close enough to my daily routine for me to eat there, so I haven't been back in a while. Bombon Americano is owned by the same people, so there's no reason the food shouldn't be as good.
