    LTHForum,

This Sundays, 4/26/09, Iron Chef America features Koren Grieveson of Avec along with Justin Large, Avec, and Stephen Dunne, Volo/Paramount Room battling Iron Chef Cat Cora.

    From FoodNetwork.com
"Chicago chef Koren Grieveson takes on Iron Chef Cora. Will Chef Grieveson's Mediterranean inspired menu win over the judges, or will Iron Chef Cora impress? Tune in to see whose cuisine reigns supreme."

Very much looking forward to watching the show and seeing Whose Cuisine Reigns Supreme. I'm rooting for the locals all the way.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

I'll be sure to watch, I just feel like the chefs are wimping out when they pick anybody but Mario or Morimoto.

    The producers pick for them.

Interestingly, in the first few seasons they didn't hid that fact at all. The more recent episodes do give the illusion that the visiting chef is allowed to pick who they are going to compete against. In any case, it doesn't seem the producers want to pay for Mario or Morimoto at all any more. I can't remember the last time I have seen them on and it kind of irks me that they still tease you that they are nominally part of the show.

Yeah, it does seem that way. Both of those chefs last appeared last season (except for the Morimoto/Cora vs Flay/Symon match this season).

Wikipedia's list of iron chef episodes is a great resource, also:

I found an interesting article poking around some IC links by Peter Kelly who beat Bobby Flay in the final (12th) episode of Season 4.

    Diary of an Iron Chef

"The first big hurdle, I soon learn, is picking which Iron Chef to battle: Mario Batali, Cat Cora, Bobby Flay, or Masaharu Morimoto. You need someone who contrasts your style. I choose Bobby Flay."

He goes on to say that Flay was the most battle hardened (he obviously isn't... Morimoto is) and why he though that it was the best match for their styles (he probably was). Anyway, interesting article all around but it directly addresses what we were making assumptions about earlier (and we were wrong so :P ).

At this point, it might be a wash: the Throwdowns aren't the same as an IC experience, but Flay has had a lot of style-for-style match-ups he's had to do, which should give him some range that sadly hasn't shown up in his ICA menus.

The middle seasons of ICA, Batali was showing a much greater range than just Italian, bringing in North African and SE Asian flavors and techniques. Does this make him a better person to challenge? I don't know, but he may be more adaptable to an unusual ingredient.

Flay's just going to put a poached egg on top at some point.

Somewhere, I had read that Batali was effectively taking a season off from the show due to other commitments.
