What happened to Cheap Eats? It appears they jettisoned their typically discerning reporters for these newbies. The restaurants they've chosen(and rated highly) recently are obviously plebian fare; suburban burgers and pizza, woohoo. Not that burgers and pizza can't rise to wonderous heights. ;) If I see one more tavern/sports bar listed, however...

For awhile there I thought Cheap Eats was taking it's cue from Chowhound, et al.

    Perhaps they still are.

Steve, After reading some of the more recent posts I would have to agree. The knowledge that CH lost, almost a year ago, is definitely our gain. (Reaching into pocket for hankerchief) Much thanks to Gary and all. Your divine knowledge has made it possible to learn something new everyday. (wiping off nose)

Normally, I try not to reply to snark but this JeffB comment can't stand unchallenged. Whether he agrees with Carol Mighton Haddix's assessment of Hecky's is not important, he is entitled to his opinion, but he grievously insults this fine food editor, my boss, who has worked at the Chicago Tribune as food editor for 30 years. Carol knows 'cue and knows Chicago. She ain't "new-ish"

A grievous insult as in "dire" or "causing anguish?" Please, Bill, as a careful writer you must recalibrate your standard for "grievous." In the dull afterglow of the recent election season, JeffB's insult was roughly as grievous as Hecky's Chicago BBQ is good.

    Choey,

This has been addressed already by JeffB in another thread.

I hope nobody will rehash this statement further on this thread as it has been covered rather completely on the other. Bill repeated his statement defending his boss, which is an admirable trait, because someone quoted it here to begin another topic.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Regards,

-is quoting outside of an original thread breaking protocol?

I HAVE found the quality of Cheap Eats reportage declining...

And I've eaten from the new Hecky's twice and found it lackluster. The first was for bbq, the second was for moderately better fried chicken.

I much prefer Monica Eng's intrepid reviews.

    "Someone"...hmmm

-is quoting outside of an original thread breaking protocol?

No ... except I think the dissection of Bill Daley's defending his boss has been done from all angles on the other thread; which Choey seemed ripe to reinitiate here. Further, Bill Daley has provided ideas on how to send in your feedback where it will be meaningful.

Now it is the power of the pen, so find that survey and fill it out! I certainly plan to.
