A quote from "It Must Have Been Something I Ate" by Jeffery Steingarten:

"... profound interest in good food may be caused by a lesion in the anterior portion of the right cerebral hemisphere of one's brain."

    HI,

So this passion cannot be inherited via our DNA. No more Nature vs Nuture, this is truly an organic problem: brain lesions.

Wow I must have been a pretty sick kid when I cooked my first egg at 3-years-old. Who knew?

Thanks for adding to the body of information.

    Regards,

Of course, steingarten eventually found out that he did not have the brain lesion in question.. his love for food developed due to some other internal or external cause.

Neither he, nor the Neurology article, suggest it's the only reason for interest in fine food and dining. He went to great lengths to determine whether or not he was affected by it, and results were mostly but not entirely negative. The upshot was that since it didn't have a negative impact on his life, why worry about it...
