Hi all:
I got this appeal via my Northside parenting version of lthforum, Ruthslist. Anyhow, this seems super compelling to me and I am wondering if any lthforum friends might be willing to donate their copies of the book for the classroom?
here's the story . . . what an amazing and responsive teacher she seems to be.

Hello All,
First of all, Happy Holidays.
Now, to the good stuff. In my fifth period class today, we were reading a poem called "Warning" by Jenny Joseph. The gist of the poem is that a middle aged woman hopes that when she is old she will be able to defy conventional stereotypes about what an old person should do/be. She will be able to "eat three pounds of sausages at a go or only bread and pickle for a week." Somehow, and this is common, we got in to a discussion about typical meals and family dining etc...No one (out of 33 kids that day) shared a traditional meal at the table with his/her family. The conversation continued in to one about Flaming Hots for breakfast and the validity of Koolaid being the same thing as water...I digress. These students really do not have a concept of what healthy eating is and should look like. So, I asked them if they would be willing to read a book about it (because, really, they're not too thrilled with poetry right now). They all responded with a resounding "yes"- which is rare for this class which can usually only agree on who the better rapper is- Jay Z or L'il Wayne. So, I have to jump on the opportunity to use materials which they have all agreed might be interesting. That said, I told them we would read Fast Food Nation (The Dark Side of the All-American Meal) which is about the marketing of food, the consequences of eating pre-packaged food, etc...The book is non-fiction and so I can justify (to the powers that be) reading it in class (most of the silly test students have to take is non-fiction). Unfortunately, I only have two copies of the book and will need about 35 more. So, I am asking you all to check your bookcases and those of your neighbor whose dog you are feeding over the break and see if you have any copies you are willing to donate to the cause. My class seems to think that I don't have enough friends who read and, thus, getting a class set will be tough. However, in my experience, I have always been able to reach out to a few people who will reach out to a few people and, eventually, I've been able to get class sets. Thank you for those of you who have helped in the past. If you are able to find and donate a copy, you can send it to me at Hyde Park High School, 6220 S. Stony Island, Chicago, 60637. I will pay the shipping if you let me know how much it costs you.
Thanks for your help and for passing this along.
