The vast interest in "All the old familiar places" made me think that people would find this interesting.

Thillens Baseball Stadium, a cornerstone of West Rogers Park, the surrounding area, and my youth, is closing down.

About 3/4ths down the coumn, in "End of an Era"

    Best,
    Michael / EC

    Hi,

I'm not surprised. The founder died within the last two years. Likely the heirs didn't want to manage it.

Actually, Mel died over a decade ago, and it has been run by a charitable foundation. Unfortunately, they can't keep up with costs.

This is a HUGE problem for friends of mine. They are getting married in ten weeks and it was supposed to be there! Check out their wedding webpage:

    Peter and Erica's Wedding page

Why yes, they are rabid baseball fans :) Anyways, they are completely freaking out about this as they now have little time to find a place that will be as perfect for them as Thillens was. If anyone has any pull with the Water Dept. ( who took over the place) or knows of a way they can get something else baseball related in the city, please let me know!
I used to think the brain was the most important part of the body. Then I realized who was telling me that.

On Chicago Tonight last night the family, who has been funding the park with proceeds from their check cashing business, indicated they couldn't afford to keep up the payments (it was in the 6-figures per year, can't recall if they said $200,000 or $600,000). Anyway, they apparently are offering all the facilities/equipment free of charge to anyone with the funds and the committment to keep the park running.
