    I was always kind of curious, but never made it there. Saw Karzai speak at the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations a few years back, and he waxed quite nostalgic about walking along the Chicago lakefront in the summer. Boy, life can be random.

    I would have titled it "Former Chicago restauranteur assassinated in Kandahar" but thats just me.

    You have to appreciate that the Tribune's spin on this story is the rather irrelevant Chicago connection.

    Hi,

    Yesterday morning after learning which restaurant he owned, I did a search on LTH. Sure enough, there were about 15 mentions. There was even speculation another Helmand on the East Coast may be owned by this guy.

    This is another situation where you never know where people end up in life. The subsequent fortunes or misfortunes can be startling.

    Mahmood Karzai owns Helmand in San Francisco and Cambridge, MA. I've enjoyed meals in both places, though it has been a long time.
