    2012 Wisconsin Local Foods Journal

What’s in season this month? What should I do with that fennel I bought at the farmers’ market? Who are the people who grow my food? If you’ve ever wished for an every-day, at-your-fingertips guide to sustainable eating, your wish has just come true. Madison authors Joan Peterson and Terese Allen have penned the2012 Wisconsin Local Foods Journal, a unique resource for Wisconsin eaters. A combination engagement calendar, culinary journal and eating guide, the book contains monthly lists of seasonal ingredients; shopping, storage and preparation guides; prize-winning recipes; interviews with market vendors; full-color photos; and more. The theme of the first annual journal is regional farmers’ markets.

When I first learned to can, I badly needed this kind of follow the seasons type journal. I was fortunate to have a friend who lived near the farm stands I frequented. She would call or e-mail when something new appeared, whether it was green beans, corn, tomatoes or Concord grapes. Once I understood the growing season rhythm, I was happily in sync.

Both authors are friends via our shared interest in culinary history.

    Regards,
