My brother is finally coming back to the US.. Woo Hoo!

But, he will be stationed in Stamford, CT, and even though I know the area REALLY well (ahem...  ) I was wondering if any of my well-travelled friends (that would be you guys) have any idea of a relative safe, cheaper alternative to living in Stamford... Apparently, rents in the city can get pretty pricey... Preferable somewhere along the New Haven line?

    Ideas, suggestions??

East Norwalk (rather than South Norwalk, though that is gentrifying too), Fairfield, and Milford are all nice places to live along the New Haven line, and should be less than living in Stamford. I think he'll find it more reasonable the further North and East he is willing to go. Or even, dare I suggest, New Haven itself. Though New Haven does have a lot of bad areas.

I take it he wants to commute by train, rather than driving a while from less expensive areas North (Danbury). And people think traffic here is bad...

I lived in CT for a couple of years. I worked in Stamford and lived in Trumbull, which is immediately west of Fairfield/Bridgeport. Trumbull is more affordable than Stamford or Fairfield, and if you stay on the east half of town, you're just a couple of minutes from the Fairfield train station. (Also, the Merritt Parkway is usually a breeze, compared to I-95, which is an absolute nightmare day and night. And the Merritt is a straight shot into Stamford from Trumbull.) Monroe and Milford also are affordable, as is Danbury. Really, anything "above" Westport/Fairfield is going to be more affordable. I would guess that Norwalk would be considerably cheaper, too.
