currently enjoying Naomi Duguid's solo Burma
and just received Charles Phan's Vietnamese Home Cooking, paging through it at leisure, I fondly recall passing The Slanted Door's original location on Valencia when San Francisco was my home back in the mid-90's

The Embarcadero location's always a stop for me when I'm back in the area, but I never dined at the original, just walked past multiple times a day. Back then, for me, it was always Tu Lan, near my work.

Thanks for the post. I've always enjoyed Duguid's books with her husband (Jeffrey Alford) and the Burma book has been high on my list. You're the first I know to have gotten it though. Any other thoughts you can share on it at this point?

I have only tried two of the recipes from the Phan book: The pork stock, which calls for a trotter, was an excellent base for a pork belly Pho. And the Hue rice dumplings were a big hit. I think I'm going to be cooking out of this book quite a bit.

I'm not much of a fan of the new location. The food at the original Slanted Door seemed to have more heart.

You're not the first person I've heard espouse that opinion. But, the Embarcadero location is a nice spot for cocktails. Fighting an awful head cold, I just completed Phan's lemongrass pork loin banh mi. "Bad" Kroger baguettes are just perfect for them. It took me three days(due to being sick), but I did it!

I just found this unique cookbook on another board and had to post it here:

The target audience must be microscopic. The author clearly put hours and hours into it and while I can't say everything looks great (engine cooked Lipton noodles with frozen burritos, anyone?), you've gotta admire his effort. Who knew you can heat a Hot Pocket on a locomotive headlamp?!?
