I've recently downloaded Cook's Illustrated for the iPad and I'm thrilled. The first thing you notice (aside from Kimball's continued rambling about the virtues of rural Vermont) is that the photos that accompany the articles beautifully morph from black and white to color. Then you can click on the products in the comparison, but best of all there are imbedded demos for each recipe, not clips from Americas Test kitchen, but a more concise run through of the recipe with visuals of the harder to explain motions.

It isn't cheap, but it has all the content of the magazine, plus the extras I mentioned, and it stores more easily. If they had back issues, I would buy the whole lot.

    Mel,

Is th iPad app a separate subscription, or does it come free with a mag and/or website subscription?

It looks like it works the same as my Bon Apetit app. The app itself is free. If you're a subscriber to the magazine, you get to download each issue out for free as it comes out. If you're not a subscriber, you can purchase individual issues and download them to your iPad through the app.

I can't stand the Cook's Illustrated iphone/ipod app. When looking at a recipe, the ingredients and instructions are on two separate pages that you have to flip back and forth to, which makes it virtually impossible to use when cooking. And it has no print capability. If I want to print a recipe, I have to go to their website with a browser, click to view the full website to get off the equally useless mobile version, sign in with my email address and password (it doesn't remember from the last time) and then search for the recipe and then print it.

On the iPad version the printed ingredients and instruction are on the same page. As a matter of fact, you can scroll through a long list of instructions on the right and the ingredient list stays on the left. The iPhone may be different.

Steve, we let our print subscription lapse before I discovered the iPad version, so I'm not sure if a print subscription gets you the year in digital. The November/December digital issue cost me $5.99, which seemed a bit high to me, but worth it.

I'm pretty sure that you need a subscription to the web site for the ipad or the iphone app. The print subscription is separate.

    Okay,

In an effort to cut down on paper, I'm thinking of jumping over to iPad version from print.

I already have a subscription to CI online, and ATK, so I'm less concerned about the duplication b/c my favorite CI. recipe is accessible to me wherever there is Internet connectivity. One draw back I've noticed online, and that's why I keep the print, is that the recipe articles are summarized online, and I actually enjoy all of the two steps forward, one step back attempts they document in the articles.

Are the articles complete, like the print articles, in the iPad edition?
