    Cool swag this year includes:
    a nice silicone oven mitt
Oaxaca al gusto by Diana Kennedy - gorgeous book, but hyper-local. Finding ingredients may be difficult.
Schmaltz by Michael Rulhmann -- mmm schmaltz. Skinny book but a lot of Jewish classics done the way my family used to do it, plus some modern uses for poultry fat. Oh, and knowing I can grab a tub of goose schmaltz at Fresh Farms means it's always a party.

I got SueF the Bouchon Bakery book, so she's happy too.

Sweet. I get tons of use out of mine. I got some new whisks and an ingenious fat separator with a drain on the bottom so that when the fat rises to the top, you can release the decanted pan drippings from the bottom.

It will be far more useful to get those tips memorialized on the board, because others will find the information useful.

i went Christmas gift-less this year, after a decade of pleading with everyone to stop. feel oddly cleansed, especially after a 4-course Chengdu dinner purged itself out of my system this morning. i consider these Sichuanese dinner the best kind: they always make me lose weight the next day.

Received: Kitchenaid meat grinder attachment (because 4 stops in Lincoln Square/Albany Park two weeks ago yielded zero ground lamb and ground turkey just wasn't as good). Gave: Rosle chinois, a fresh white truffle from Eataly, Urbani truffle shaver. The good news is we live together so we get to share it all! Happy Holidays, everyone!

I don't think I got anything particularly kitchenish this year, but I did give Chouxfly a copy of this book about savory cocktails, and am looking forward to enjoying his experiments!

I got myself a meat thermometer, the cheaper ThermoWorks one recommended to me on the "Tips and Methods for Cooking Meat" thread, since we decided to make Christmas for the kids this year. But I also spent the holiday with my sister, who always teaches me culinary things when I'm around her, so I left her place with new recipes for cheddar ale soup and mac and cheese, and a burning desire for a Vitamix or other powerful blender (will take suggestions on alternatives if you have any). I'm saving up for that! Happy new year to you all.

    I asked for a polder-type oven thermometer,
and got a Nook e-reader.... sigh
haven't decided if I'm going to keep it yet
He actually asked me if I wanted one one night and I said NO in no uncertain terms.
I said I wanted to make vacation plans instead.
So since I said no, he bought me one anyway...?

Laughing so hard at this. I told him about 15 times that I wanted the Pok Pok cookbook. Got 3 scarves instead. Gotta love 'em.
