Not the Jolly Rancher kind. We used to buy these round candies that looked like a slice of watermelon...green outer edge, bright pink inside with black dots for seed. Only ever saw them at the candy shop in old Long Grove way back in the 70s (we were in that store when the radio news was announced that Nixon was going to resign). They were wrapped in clear cello and sold in bulk.

Anyway, I've searched vintage candy sites and had no success, I'd kill to find these again.

Have you checked the massive Eastern European candy section at Fresh Farms in Niles? I don't know if they have those specifically, but they have a really big selection of those types of old school, individually wrapped hard candies.

    Hi,

If I happen upon them anywhere, I'll buy them for you. I never saw them, though they sound charming.

    Hard candy? Soft?

Candy Warehouse has four pages of watermelon candy of various sorts. On the second page, they have a hard candy that seems to match your description: http://www.candywarehouse.com/flavors/f ... d=157&pg=2

Those are what I was thinking she meant. They are chewy and good. I want some.

To my mind, and based on the description in the OP, those sound exactly like what the OP is asking for.

Cynthia, Steve, you guys are close. I should've mentioned they were hard candies. Obviously the color in the photo may not be accurate, I believe the centers were more pink, almost hot pink, but I would absolutely say these are very close. I have zero need for quite so much as candy warehouse requires for an order, but if curiosity gets the better of me I will order and report back. Thank you all.

You may already know this, but Vermont Country Store offers a lot of hard-to-find candies, but in more reasonable quantities than Candy Warehouse.

    Hi,

You can always bring those candies to the picnic, because I am sure people are interested to see these.
