i saw a delightful movie (on netflix) called "deli man", about a youngish mensch named ziggy gruber who owns kenny and ziggy's NY deli, in houston. there are many brief interviews with other deli 'men' ( only 1 deli woman, jacqueline canter, from LA, and her interview is in the extra footage), but it focuses on ziggy. he started off deli life at age 8 working with his grandpa and father in a deli (name?) in NY. he went to culinary school in europe and had a very fast moving career in fine dining, which he gave up when he realized all the deli people in the US were old, so he came back to open a very successful deli. i would have liked to know why he picked houston (they never say). but the guy is funny, sweet, loveable, and absolutely somebody you'd want to know; and who you would want to be feeding you. there's also a little romance (and if you watch the worthy extras, you meet the next generation....). a brief interview with kenny and danny rankin from manny's deli is the only chicago mention. but this doesn't pretend to be comprehensive. i highly recommend this- i wish i had some reason to go to houston so i could meet ziggy....even more than trying his food, i'd love to talk to him.

We caught it when it was still playing in theaters. It is a delight and highly recommended.

I watched this movie last night (found it on Amazon Prime instant video). Ziggy's an interesting guy and his deli looks great. I need to book a ticket to Houston ASAP.

My synagogue had a deli dinner, followed by this movie and then a brief service, on a recent Friday night. We really loved the movie, but I was hungry again by the time it was over!

Thanks for posting about this, Joan. My son and I watched it last night on Amazon Prime and really enjoyed it. I learned a little and found Ziggy very endearing. The food made us both hungry! I loved his hand-sliced lox, so thin "you can see an eclipse through it," and those stuffed veal chops looked fantastic.
