I was thinking about this place recently, one of the real innovators of its day. This was the first place I ever had skate (which caused my Bostoner father-in-law to comment "they're charging you money for chum?"). Between Star Top and the nearby Jackie's (as well as Mike Short's earlier gig at Salvatore's) I had my early crash courses in fine dining.

I've tried for years to remember the name of this place -- thanks for bringing back great memories of what my now-husband and I thought made us the most daring of diners (right up there with trips to the original Earwax Cafe in faraway Wicker Park). We loved the wacky painted furniture and loud music almost as much as the envelope-pushing food and relished taking out-of-town friends who didn't know what to make of it. That whole stretch of Lincoln Avenue -- with all the independent bookstores and great restaurants & bars -- was our favorite hangout. Thanks for a great memory.
