I just made reservations for a return visit to Dorado Restaurant and was informed that they are still BYOB but have now instituted a corkage fee of $2 for a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer. This strikes me (and my husband especially) as really tacky, especially for the beer. Wine maybe requires some special handling that justifies the fee, but beer? My hasband said he'd be happy to bring his own bottle opener. Anyway, I don't understand why restaurants do this. It seems like you're nickle-and- diming your customers, and I can't believe that the $2 they're charging will offset the possible offense to the patrons. Am I wrong? If so, I'm happy to stand corrected, and will tell my husband not to be so irked.

They're going to supply glasses and perhaps ice to keep the undrinken beers cold, and, most importantly, they're not going to get the profit they'd get if you'd ordered a Coke or some other drink from their drink menu. Seems cheap to me. (The $2 charge that is, not the restaurant).

I agree with Ann. If a restaurant charges a fee and provides no service I could see how there could be a reason to complain. If, though, they provide the glassware (which of course they will then have to clean) and cool the beverages I think $2 is extremely reasonable.
