My one and only visit to Tipsy Cake (it's very close to Feed) was very disappointing. It appeared to be more of a catering operation than a retail bakery. The only goods they had on sale were some French macaroons that were a bit long in the tooth and they acted like they were doing me a favor selling me some.

Steve, you are correct to note that much of their business is custom cakes, not retail. And I'm not certain when you were there, but if you were around the holidays, it was a bit chaotic. The retail store is always a great thing to get business in the door, but also difficult to staff and maintain when things get busy. I also know that when the Hungry Hound included them in a tv segment, they ran out of product, which may have been around the time when you were there. Anyhow, sounds like the Australia day might be the perfect time for you to give them a second chance if you've got the time. Little to lose when the tasting is free.

Oh, and I will disclose that the reason that I have this insider knowlege is that the owner is a friend of mine.

I was there on 11/13 after lunch at Feed, so maybe you're correct about the timing of the holiday rush. At the time, they were quite rude and non (retail) customer friendly. It didn't look like they even had much of a retail operation set up besides the jar of stale macaroons. I'll have to give them a second chance next time I am in the neighborhood. I really wanted to like the place.
