Possibly, though in my case I know exactly where Cicero is, an hour from my house, minimum, early on a weeknight.

Yes, I understand the concept of distance.

I think the issue is that because Cicero is, by and large, terra incognita for many of the people who post on this board, they imagine it to be just a half-step before the map reads "Here There Be Monsters."

Almost accurate. My map just has a big thick line at Harlem Ave. and on the other side of it, in huge type, it just says "Katy's" ;)

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought that description was already reserved for those of us residing in the southern suburbs.

No, Suzy, my map is completely blank between the Museum of Science and Industry and Memphis. :P

#1 thanks to Antonio for creating an occasion so graciously, I enjoyed this introduction to Mayan cuisine ... and am still tracking down Yucatan coffee beans.

#2 I took the Pink Line coming & going ... about 3/4 hour from the loop ... straight shot though because Laramie is the easternmost exit at the terminal 54th/Cicero ... so the walk there about .5 mile or so --

#3 Thanks to Nora for the ride to the CTA ... it took me about an hour to get home, which is not unreasonable

Yes, that's basically my point. Of course there's going to be people like Gary for whom getting to Cicero is an inconvenience. Not everyone on LTH lives in the same neighborhood. My post is not directed at these people. However, my point is that I've encountered so many folks who live literally about 20 minutes from Cicero complain that it's so far away and so hard to get to, when it's not. I mean, Cicero is closer (or as close as) Oak Park, much closer than Westmont (and folks make the trip out to Katy's), etc.

There is definitely my impression that for many people Cicero is psychologically perceived as being further away than it really is. I just think that it's seen that way because it's out of folk's usual comfort zone. Cicero has a rather negative connotation in the area, for the most part, and people don't just visit it for kicks, so it feels like it's on the cusp of exurbia when, in reality, it immediately borders the city.

Perhaps this is also an issue of perspective. For me, except for Xni Pec and a few notable exceptions, I'm always driving around 30-40 minutes if I want to go out to a decent place to eat.

Ah, see I can walk less than a mile and get so much food I probably can't hope to eat at all these places!
