Take one part Shark Tank, add one part Top Chef, throw in a dash of Launch My Line and spread evenly over American Idol. When cooled, liberally shake on Next Food Network Star. Don't consume.

Actually, this sounds like it might be right up some LTHers alley.

    From the link:
""This is a huge, nationwide search for the best amateur chef in America," said executive producer Howard T. Owens of Reveille. "It's about people who are lawyers, construction workers and stay-at-home moms but whose real passion is to make great food. This is their shot to prove they have what it takes."

The details for Fox's "MasterChef" are being worked out, but the show will most closely resemble the Australian edition. In each season, contestants from around the country audition by creating a dish for a panel of three judges to earn spots as semi-finalists. The remaining contestants compete each week via team-based and individual cooking challenges until only one remains."

I think this was originally a UK show. I can also remember a version done on PBS here maybe about 10 years ago. The PBS version was purely an individual competition with people representing different regions - no teams involved.

    Again from the link above:
"The "MasterChef" format has aired in several incarnations in the U.K., with the earliest dating to 1990. The Australian edition premiered this year and has been a ratings powerhouse, its finale ranking as one of the country's most-watched programs in a decade"

I wonder if during this series Gordon Ramsay will discuss how he essentially mismangaged his entire 'empire' to the brink of bankruptcy.

Wiliam Green at Bloomberg.com wrote:In the fall of 2008, his London-based Gordon Ramsay Holdings Ltd. breached the covenants on a 10.5 million-pound loan and overdraft facility from Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc. The bank hired KPMG to perform an independent review of the firm, 69 percent of which is owned by Ramsay and 31 percent by his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson. In late December, Ramsay says, KPMG recommended that the company declare bankruptcy, fire hundreds of people and close all but its best-performing restaurants.

 Of course, nobody who "has what it takes" ever becomes a lawyer, construction worker, or stay-at-home mom. God forbid that any of those types of people even eat, or so help me, cook.

Nice post about the audition process here.
Contestants were supposed to arrive with a dish that could be served room temp. "The health department's worst nightmare," I couldn't help thinking. No sweat. I made geoduck crudo using a recipe I begged chef Ethan Stowell to share after I fell in love with this ceviche-like dish last spring at his restaurant, Anchovies and Olives.

It's a fairly simple preparation, but it's brilliant because geoduck—which is native to the Pacific Northwest—is so novel, its appearance in the raw so ripe for dirty jokes (Excuse me, is that a giant clam or are you just happy to see me?). I brought along an extra geoduck (pronounced "gooey duck") with me to the casting for a little show and tell because nothing says good TV like a phallic-looking bivalve, right?
