Dave148, thank you for organizing a great LTH North lunch and taking in a non member, even if you wouldn't show me the secret handshake. It's been years since I've been up to Barnaby's, but the pizza is as good as I remembered. We tried six different pizzas along with a couple of hamburgers and the onion rings.
I remember the onion rings being hand breaded 20 years ago, but that's gone, they were serviceable, but nothing special. The burgers were good, I've always liked them, a good option if you don't like pizza, but I wouldn't drive all the way to Northbrook for them. The pizza is clearly the star of the show. If I remember correctly we had a plain cheese, sausage, pepperoni and onion, bacon and mushroom, sausage, onion and jalapeno, and one other pepperoni and ?, someone will have to refresh my memory as to the second ingredient. The crust was fluted like a pie crust and very crunchy with a heavy sprinkling of cornmeal on the bottom. A couple of people found the taste reminiscent of Lou Malaniti's, but I thought it lacked the sweetness I've found in Lou's. I am very much a crunch person so I really liked this crust, but I can see it might not be to everyones taste. My favorite was the bacon and mushroom pizza, I find myself still thinking about today, bits of crunchy bacon with carmelized mushrooms, the taste of both really shone through. Too often pizza restaurants don't cook their mushrooms enough to bring out the nutty, woodsy flavor, but they really shone at Barnaby's. My second choice is the sausage, jalapeno and onion, I really liked the taste of their sausage, not too sweet with an undertone of fennel seed, the jalapeno's added a nice touch of heat.
All in all a great lunch and it was great to catch up with so many friends. Sorry pairs4life, no one took pictures.
