It's the holidays season and the house is filled with aromas of sugar and butter. The one delicacy that cannot be missed during this time of year is Stollen. It's a Christmas tradition that dates back to the early 14th century. However it has not always had this buttery flavor.

In the early days, the church did not allow butter or milk to be consumed during advent. In 1450 Elector Ernst of Saxony and his brother Albrecht applied to the Pope Nikolaus V. for an repeal of the butter-prohibition. It took over 40 years for the Vatican to grant this request and in 1490 the Holy Father gave in to their petition and sent a letter, known as „butter-letter“, to Dresden. In that letter he had declared that richer ingredients were allowed, however in return the Dresden Stollen bakers had to pay a fine. The funds from the fine were used to built new churches, such as the Freiberg Cathedral, which still can be visited today.

Join us at the DANK kitchens and learn how to bake Stollen from scratch. You will quickly understand why this treat is so beloved and commands its own festival every winter at the Dresden Christmas market.

Attendees receive instructions, recipes, tasting and one drink.
