While most people are scouring the woods for morels in the Spring, there is a treasure trove of other fungi that are often overlooked or ignored in our haste to find food for the table. This talk will focus on some of the fungi, besides morels, that are encountered in the forest in spring and early summer. You will see images of a few edible fungi, several fascinating pathogens, and a number of fungi which are ecologically important or mycologically interesting. Andrew Methven is a mycologist and lichenologist with interests in the systematics, ecology, and phylogeny of fleshy fungi and lichens. He teaches courses in mycology, lichens, and field mycology and maintains the Cryptogamic Herbarium (with more than 10,000 collections of fungi and lichens). Included among his research interests are the identification and ecology of fleshy fungi, mycogeography, the effects of forest alteration on fleshy fungi, the application of compatibility studies and molecular techniques to fungal systematics, and the identification and distribution of lichens in the Midwest.
A native of California, Andy’s formal education in mycology began under the tutelage of Dr. Harry Thiers at San Francisco State University and concluded as a doctoral student in Dr. Ron Petersen’s lab at the University of Tennessee. Since arriving in Illinois, he has traveled extensively throughout eastern North America collecting, photographing, and identifying fungi. Andy has published three books as well as numerous scientific and popular articles on mushrooms, led mushroom identification courses in Michigan and North Carolina, and presented lectures and workshops on fungi to a variety of audiences.
