Talk & Tasting with Darra Goldstein, author of The Oxford Companion to Sugar & Sweets
Thursday, May 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Join us for a fascinating and delicious investigation of the changing perceptions of sugar through time with Darra Goldstein, the founder and former editor-in-chief of the James Beard Award-winning journal Gastronomica--who is also the food editor of Russian Life magazine and a professor of Russian studies at Williams College. Goldstein edited the monumental new Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets, and tonight she will take us on a journey from the time when sugar was considered beneficial to health--even prescribed as a medicine--to its current incarnation as a primary source of our maladies.
And what fun would that be without tasting some examples--for instance, some old-fashioned comfits (to demonstrate medicinal use), meringues (a 17th-century European invention), and some of those brownies that were supposedly invented at the Palmer House in 1893 in honor of the Columbian Exposition!
This event is free but seating will be limited so please RSVP to the store ASAP at 224-999-7722 or send in your seating request to
