    1. Chicago Region habitats and tree associations
This PowerPoint presentation will look at the various habitats found in the Chicago Region and some of the kinds of mushrooms that can be found there. We’ll also talk about common trees in Cook County and how to recognize them.

    2. Tree Identification
We’ll take to the Nature Center trails to see a variety of trees and use a key to identify oak, elm, ash and others. Learn tips on tree identification using a handout. If you have a tree guide then bring it along. Mushrooms often have particular associations with live trees or dead wood. The shapes and arrangement of leaves along with buds and bark are features we will examine. A great pocket size book: Trees of Illinois Field Guide, by Stan Tekiela. 2006. Adventure publications. The IL DNR has a nice activity book for kids:

Future workshops will be given on the Sundays of August 2nd and August 9th.

North Park Village Nature Center is located at 5801 North Pulaski Road, Chicago, Illinois 60646. From the intersection of North Pulaski Road and West Ardmore Avenue, go east into the North Park Village Campus. Drive past the booth, you do not need to stop. At the T-junction, turn left. Then take a quick right. You will see the forest of the nature center on the left. Shortly you'll arrive at a parking lot on your right as you approach the front of the nature center building. The road between the parking lot and the main entrance may be blocked, but the center will still be open and accessible.
