The Evanston lunch group will be meeting at al-Watan Grill on Thursday July 14 at 12:30. Al-Watan Grill is on Skokie Boulevard in Skokie, a block or so south of Main Street, and features Pakistani food. My students were catering a dinner and tried various Pakistani restaurants before deciding that al-Watan Grill was the best; the dinner was really first rate, by the way.

When I worked in Skokie (as recently as 2004), that spot had an endless succession of awful Chinese restaurants - they'd change the name every year or two, but the food remained consistently bad to the point where I think if they didn't keep the chef between managers they at least had the same recipe book. Here's hoping this is better - I wish I could join you (but I don't have a card).

Toast, as every breakfaster knows, isn't really about the quality of the bread or how it's sliced or even the toaster. For man cannot live by toast alone. It's all about the butter. -- Adam Gopnik

Tarte Tatin is joining us. It's the usual suspects, I guess.

The six of us had a pleasant lunch at Al-Watan Grill, a new Pakistani restaurant (with an all-American menu of pizza and hamburgers as well) in Skokie.

The food was pleasant enough, but not a destination restaurant. However, the eggplant special was, well, special, and worth ordering again. The other dishes were the standards. Service was a little slow, but pleasant.
