I made a half batch yielding about 3.5 dozen cookies. I think the yield suggested in the recipe is due to smaller portions. I liken it to the brownie recipe in the Joy of Cooking. The recipe remained the same through out the years, but the yield was smaller as the portion increased over subsequent editions.
Those present recognized it as an old style sugar cookie. CookieMonster suggested added grated lemon peel to transform it into a lemon cookie.
