For many years, the Evanston Lunch Group™ has had a summertime picnic; last year we dedicated the picnic to the memory of Gale Adams, who posted on LTH as Tarte Tatin. Gale was a long-time, fervent supporter of LTH who passed away suddenly in 2017, missing several LTH events she had been looking forward to.

We will be celebrating her memory again Thursday, August 16, 12:30 pm at Larimer Park in Evanston.

For this picnic, we’ll get carryout from a number of favorite places, and convene on the picnic benches under the shelter in Larimer Park. Attendees willing to pick up easily sharable carryout for the group should sign up as such; others are most welcome too, to share whatever is brought. I’ll keep a list of who’s picking up food, and from where, as well as others joining us. By checking the list the day before or so, those picking up carryout should be able to gauge the appropriate quantities to bring. We’ll do our best to settle up at the picnic.

Larimer Park is one block east of Ridge, and one block south of Dempster. Parking is available on Crain St, or on Oak Ave south of Dempster (which ends in a cul-de-sac at the park’s edge). It's also a short walk from the Purple Line's Dempster "L" stop. Here’s a map:
    Larimer Park.jpg

    Larimer Park

Here's the list of attendees and from where they'll bring food (to be periodically updated):
    nr706 — The Fish Keg
    Cathy2 — beverages & ice
    Lougord99
    B2B — Pita Inn
    GAF — Ewa's Pierogi
diverse dancer — Reconstructed elotes & Thai Green Curry
    Friday — plates

Again, all are welcome. Hope to see many LTHers remembering Gail/Tarte Tatin there.

    Hi,

I expect to attend. If I did what Gail did, I would bring the beverages (and ice).

    Is that ok?

    Regards,

I will join you and I am willing to pick up food. However, I need some suggestions as to where to pick up as I know very little about Evanston dining

I wouldn't miss this. I'll bring fried chicken from Evanston Chicken Shack. I'll skip the forgettable sides.

I doubt I can enjoy you but what a remarkable way to celebrate Gail through breaking bread together.

You may wish to consider GNRs Hoosier Mama Pie's Evanston outpost (GNR is for the original in the city only), Edzo's (pack ice for milkshakes), and Cross Rhodes for additions to the menu.

If you pack ice you can pick up chocolates to finish the meal from Piron Chocolatier on Main.

If you are willing to travel a smidge north into Skokie GNRs Kaufman's & Kabul House are there (double check this because I swear I drove by Kabul House in shiny, spanking new digs east of McCormick on Monday and that should place it in Evanston, not Skokie).

In addition to Ken's excellent suggestions, you might consider Freshii or Next of Kin. Since EvA and I are both bringing fried food, something healthy could be an interesting change of pace.

I'm really bummed that I cannot be there to join in memorializing a very wonderful person. I have a work obligation. If it dissolves, which seems unlikely, I'll be there.

I hope to come but will have to reschedule an ophthalmologist's appointment I have for 10:45 that morning (these run from 90 minutes to 6 hours).

If I come, I'm looking at my Confetti Slaw II with separate dressing so you can have creamy style or vinegar style. And something else, maybe carry-out. Possibly Pita Inn or Hecky's rib tips. The start time means getting the carry out exactly at the peak busy time for the restaurant.

Anybody know a place to get elotes in the corridor from Evanston west to the airport with free parking by the door (don't want to go to downtown Evanston, fine and pay for a meter, walk a block or two to/from just to get falcon eddy's overpriced ones).

La Principal on Main just south of the picnic has elotes on their menu. Parking seems pretty easy to me, but I think the same about downtown Evanston honestly.

    I'll be there.

I am now in Western North Carolina, and my first thought was to bring back BBQ, but if I did it would be two weeks old and where I am (two hours west of Asheville) is not BBQ country, so that is out.

But I'll think of something to bring.

I’ll pick up hummus, baba ganoush and warm pita bread from the Pita Inn. To reinforce the “healthy/veggie theme I’ll bring some baby carrots for dipping, too.

I just want to chime in that I remember Gail as a light, smiling, upbeat presence at LTH events. I will not be in Chicago to say so at the picnic. I think it is lovely and in the spirit of the LTH community to meet and celebrate Gail's memory.

Hmmm, I was sure I had posted that I changed my appointment and was definite. Maybe I never hit "submit post"....

My legs tend to fail me if I attempt to enter an establishment for carry out...well, as a kid we essentially never did carry out or delivery, so it is difficult for me. Anyway, my thing is to take traditional foods and make them more healthy.

--Confetti slaw II (your choice creamy or vinegar)
and at least one of the following experiments (practicing for LTH picnic)
    --Green tomato pita
--relotes (vegan, healthy and/or new wave, with choices)
--Thai green curry (well this is old, more of a fall back)

I will go to Ewa's Pierogi in Glenview, and will bring some - I don't know - perhaps Pierogi. I might also bring some Pelmeni.

Arrrgh Is this a habit, or does LTHFORUM lose my posts? Again, I was sure I updated to say I will bring:

    Relotes: reconstructed elotes
Thai Green Curry: so we have a non-fried entree
(probably) Green tomato pita: low fat reconstruction of green tomato pie.

    I will NOT bring:
Velotes (vegan elotes): too many ingredients would go to waste.
Confetti Slaw II: minimal batch is at least two gallons

If you look at the map posted upthread, you'll see that Oak St., ending in a cup-de-sac, is also a good parking option. Also, it's only a five block walk from the Dempster St. L stop, or a 15 minute walk from either the Main St or Davis St Metra stations.

Hi- Yes I am going to show up, but I can only stay until about 12:55, and so that just means I won't have time to eat too much. Is anybody else bringing paper plates? I could bring those and some napkins, and I might also bring either some zucchini bread or some corn muffins or both. Thanks, Nancy

On Cook County Forest Preserve property, they don't like fire on their tables. If this were the other picnic, I would have to check.

I would bring some foil to place underneath to protect the surface.

Beautiful weather. Beautiful people (perhaps just a slight exaggeration, but not fake news). And a wonderful way to remember Gail (aka Tarte Tatin). Looking forward to TT 3rd annual picnic.
