question: i've always known that glass beverage containers were forbidden; but what about glass pans, such as pyrex pie plates or casseroles? i can't remember if i've ever seen them at the picnic. thanks, joan

As far as I can tell form the official guidelines, only glass drinking containers are prohibited. All other glass is OK.

The idea is that they don't want a bunch of beer bottles beng tossed around.

i understand that- and i think it's a great idea. but if the concern isn't just preventing litter, but preventing broken glass that can injure people, or dogs, then glass of other sorts should also be banned. joan

    Hi,

At the original location for the picnic, some kids went through the woods collecting beer bottles and tossing them in the garbage. I believe it was Cynthia who pointed out we might be pegged as responsible for them. I called the Forest Preserve to alert them to how those bottles ended up in our garbage.

For all our efforts to follow their rules, I didn't want our garbage to act as a tattle tale. :)

Alright, we are down to come out.
It will be me and my wife. We are stuffing a few different kinds of sausages today, so we'll bring a bunch of sausages and homemade condiments to go along with it.
And we might figure something else out by then, really looking forward to it!

Will attend. The dish I'm bringing, brownies-from-a-box, isn't especially innovative, but it's the dish always I bring to picnics, and it always goes quickly, so I decided to be conservative and stick with what I know since this is my first time attending one of these events.

Countdown is ticking! Please check your reservation here and PM me if you need changes made.

    Here are the latest stats:

    Total guests
    180

    17 Appetizers
    15 Beverages
    3 Bread
    0 Condiment
    24 Dessert
    13 Main
    4 Salad
    10 Side
    1 Supplies
    16 TBD
    0 Other

    4 Need grill
    3 Bringing grill

Please note: if you are still TBD, it helps us a lot to know what you're bringing ahead of time. Right now, looks like we're lighter on salads, sides, condiments and breads. I also noted that while there's lots of water and fancy drinks, I don't think anyone is bringing ordinary assorted soda (another task for a non-cook.)

Also, if you need grill space PLEASE PERUSE THE THREAD AND PM SOMEONE WHO HAS OFFERED TO BRING A GRILL to arrange time and space for your food.

Again, no glass bottles (and I'm with Joan - I'd avoid glass of any kind if possible; it's a messy cleanup waiting to happen.) Other handy suggestions from past picnics: tents, umbrellas and other ways to make shade and shelter are a good idea. Things for kids to play with like balls, games, etc. Sometimes the fields can be muddy - so a change of clothes for kids is not a bad call. Bug repellent. Sunscreen. Hats.

Please also make arrangements to keep HOT FOODS HOT and COLD FOODS COLD and be aware of food safety. You can set your dish on top of icepacks or on a heating pad.

We'll bring our kettle grill and some lump charcoal. We are just going to be grilling up some sausages that will arrive warm, so it shouldn't take long just to get some nice grill marks.
So, someone else is welcome to use the grill as well, either side by side with me or after we're done. We're bringing one bag of charcoal and a chimney, if you need lots of coals, you might need to bring it.

And I forgot to mention in the last post, the sausages could be cut up for app sizes or served whole as a main... Stuffing them today, hope they turn out well!

Thanks! It'll be fun meeting LTHers, I'm really glad you guys organize such a great event!

    HI,

Why don't we play it by ear with the serving size. Some may want whole and others just want a taste.

I tend to take bites of many things.

Last year, people would put their offering on a tray and walk it around. It certainly is a swell way to meet many people.

I meant to post first thing today that I would be falling back on my old standby and bringing pop... but got distracted by w.o.r.k. Is it too much if a couple of people bring soft drinks? If so, I'll go back to the drawing board....
