Lovely Dining Companion and I have cleared the calendar in eager looking-forward-to-ness of attending this once-in-a-lifetime event. LDC expects to be full after her token single potsticker and I expect to eat enough for two--our normal approach to dining.

I would say that's we'll be there with bells on, but I don't want to give anything away :D

PS Should this properly be referred to, shorthand-wise, as Chanakwanzadan or Christiceivus?

FYI to all: we're reaching capacity. We had estimated that 60 would be the right number to meet the demand while not over-extending Ed's -- over 50 people have now paid for tickets.

    Should be a helluva party.

    We have hit capacity...

...but given the high level of interest in this event, we've raised the total seating to 65 (we're afraid that if we go higher, we will be too cramped).

So, if you think you might want to come but have been putting it off, it's kind of a now or never scenario.

If seating closes and there are still those who want to come, we will create a wait list but cannot guarantee seating.

The box office at BrownPaperTickets is now closed.

We still have two seats left, so if you still want to come to this event, you can send a check to me (205 S. Scoville, Oak Park, 60302). FCFS.

If you want to be put on the waiting list, you can post your name in this thread.

If you have a ticket and can't make it, contact a person on the waiting list and see if they want to buy it from you.

Looks like this will be a full and fun event.

Can someone explain how the gift exchange worked last year? Do people bring wrapped "mystery gifts" and it's just a luck of the draw exchange? I'm bringing something that would probably be appreciated more by someone who is a BBQ cook than someone who isn't, for example. How do we make sure that our gifts end up in the "right hands", so to speak. Is there a game plan?

Yes. Here's how it works: bring a gift, get a ticket. We have a drawing and everyone who brought a gift takes home another gift.

Last year, the gifts included tubs of lard from Bruce, some excellent sausages from Peter Daane, a Bill Clinton cookbook (won by C2, much to her enduring chagrin), several "Oy to the World" CDs (donated by PaulSL, the genius behind this excellent collection), and so on. My contribution this year will be some Peter Luger sauce and a goat milk soap from Farmer Vicki. It's that simple.

Don't bother wrapping the gift; just bring something food-related and/or fun, not expensive (10 bucks or so, max).

It's totally voluntary, and exchanges are possible: last year, I brought a Cher cookbook which I believe Gary persuaded someone to give him in trade for his prize...because, you know, he's really into Cher.

    HI,

It wasn't a gift exchange, rather it was a raffle. Distribution of these items is random, though people are free to trade their prizes. I got a cookbook that one might not think is for me, though I took it home and kept it anyway.

I have heard where raffles have been organized where the person who just drew a gift can then go up to someone who already received a gift, take it from them and give this person their gift. While some have explained it can be "great fun." Every account I have ever read seemed like it was more hostile if not greedy. [Have you ever noticed how often 'America's Funniest Videos' involve someone getting hurt or embarassed? Like that is funny?]

If you have a better idea, then I am all ears.

In any case, we have three seats left!

    Cathy2

I think the way we did it last year was the best among many different "gift exchanges" I've been to. We just went down the table of gifts and called out numbers. Afterwards, plenty of exchanging went on throughout the group and a lot of people left very happy.

    Looking forward to next weekend.

    Best,

    Final Countdown: LTHChanukahKwanzaaRamadanChristmasWinterSolsticeFestivus

Eating of vast quantities begins shortly after 7:00 PM, December 9 at Ed's Potsticker House (3139 S. Halsted).

Raffle will take place after dinner; bring a raffle gift (an approximately $10 value), and get a ticket to win a prize – if you don’t want to be in the raffle, that is totally cool – it’s all voluntary – you can still watch. In the extraordinarily giving spirit of LTHChanukahKwanzaaRamadanChristmasWinterSolsticeFestivus, some people are bringing more than one gift. To give you an idea of what you might bring, here’s a very partial list of some of the gifts:

    • Home-cured bacon from MikeG
    • Leaf lard from Bruce
    • Machine that turns a hot dog into an octopus from Josephine
    • Peter Lugar sauce and Farmer Vicki soap from Hammond
    • Eat Local package of preserves and sorghum from VI
    • Chocolate sour-cream bundt from Eat Chicago and Petit Pois
    • Combo pack of BBQ sauces and rub from stevez

    The Final Menu

    • Colder appetizer plate: pork liver, brisket, duck liver
    • Northern-style cold tofu
    • Cold Shanghai-style tofu with mushrooms and walnuts
    • Soup dumplings
    • Ed’s northern potstickers
    • Cold tea-smoked chicken
    • Two-layer ground beef pancake
    • Smoked pork and scallion pancake with hoisin sauce
    • Salt and pepper squid and fish filet
    • Rice noodle with vegetable and beef
    • Sea cucumber and tendon
    • Fish fragrant eggplant
    • Steam pork hock in brown sauce
    • Pork belly, quail egg in brown sauce
    • Lamb with cumin
    • Whole sculpted fish with slight sweet sauce
    • Duck tongue
    • Szechwan beef maw
    • Szechwan beef tendon
    • Noodles
    • Chicken feet
    • Northern pancake
    • Cilantro cucumber salad
    • Hot shredded potato
    • Lily flower with celery
    • One big ass cake from House of Fine Chocolate

Some items on this menu may be modified pending availability, but as of last Sunday, Ran seemed confident all raw materials would be available.

For beverages (included in price of admission), we’ll be serving from two cases of rosé sparkling wine selected by sommelier-in-residence Pigmon, as well as a keg of beer hand-delivered by our Minister of Brewed Beverages, ReneG. There will also be soda, mineral water and tea…and purportedly bourbon and other items that individual members may wish to bring. And of course, there will be Skylark.
