Sure when I saw the calendar, it does remind all of us of another day not so long ago. On 9/11, I was managing volunteers repacking tulips bulbs for a fundraiser. When I walked into the room they had on a funeral dirge. While it was an overwhelmingly day, just think not one airplane in the sky, we still soldiered on (after I found some lighter music).

I can't let your feelings change the course of what everyone may choose to do. If you want to stay home to acknowledge this occasion, fine. If you want to join us, you are welcome as well. You are responsible for your feelings, though you cannot obligate people to feel the same.

That's the way I look at it. I know it sounds very cliche, but like the politicians are fond of saying, if you let the terrorists affect your life, they win.

I certainly understand that people have varying emotional responses to the anniversary, for myself I feel that the horrendous act was done to scare people and disrupt their lives. I refuse to let it do that to me. On 9/11 itself my main emotional response was a sort of Churchillian defiance and a desire to DO something. I certainly understand that other people have different (and very legitimate) responses, but for myself I mark the occasion by enjoying the liberties and freedoms we have. It also serves as a reminder to me that life is short, and very unpredictable - enjoy it while you can. Both the LTH Picnic and the Goose Island Pig Roast fit the bill to me in this regard.

And like everyone - I really appreciate the hard work Cathy puts into this.
