Iirc, there were some nights when bread was provided (in quite generous amounts) by outside bakeries and also by the folks from the organization whose evening it was. I also seem to remember some nights when the hosting organization provided most or all of the bread (but I could be remembering this wrong).

I'm not sure how it's supposed to work this season but when I volunteered above to bring some bread, it was with the idea that I would get it from a bakery I really like. We'll get some clarification and report back asap.

thanks jen. sign me up. i'll decide later what i'm bringing, but i might do the cheese/pecan crackers i made for the LTH picnic. they'll go nicely with any of the soups. and, no, i don't want to put bacon or beer in them.....

They definitely have a bread donor--La Farine used to be the main one--I'm pretty sure it's someone else this year--I just can't recall right now who Martha said it was. We've always had people bring bread in addition to what was donated so whether you purchase it or bake it, I'm sure it will be much appreciated. And I definitely know there have been dessert-type items available as well. So if you want to contribute, just let us know and when it gets a bit closer, I'll send over our list. My only suggestion would be to contribute something easy to grab--I recall there being some gridlock and serving issues with things that required cutting/slicing on the spot since there isn't a lot of table space and the room gets pretty crowded.

Thanks for all of the interest so far!!

Great idea Joan--those will be much appreciated! I made croutons one year to go with something (I think it might've been spicy tomato bacon soup) and they were a big hit.

They also are advertising for people to help out at the event--slicing bread, selling books, helping clear plates, etc.--so I'm sure if a few folks wanted to volunteer to do that instead of cooking, that, too, would be appreciated.

That's the spirit!! We definitely need help serving--always good to have an extra person working in case someone wants to leave their station to grab a drink, etc.--and we'll need help slicing and setting out/refreshing whatever non-soup food items are contributed. If you decide you'd like to bring something, just let me know--but not necessary :) Thanks for pitching in!

I don't mind staying at my station as long as there is someone to grab a drink for me! ;)

I think I've decided on making a Belgian beer braised bacon, pork shoulder and white bean soup with garlic, rosemary and broccoli rabe, topped with a bit of shredded sharp provolone--kind of a philly pork sandwich meets white bean chili riff).

Have made a first draft of my soup, we'll be having it for dinner, so if it works it's what I'm making.

(basically Tomato, Navy Bean and Bacon, using beer as some of the liquid)

would it be possible to get a recap of the soups everyone is making so I don't duplicate?

I was doing a bit of recipe reconnaissance and decided to change my soup entry to Ginger Soybean soup with beer-braised Pork Belly (as a topping--o/w vegan). I thought it might be fun to try something really different from anything I've made before--and I've actually never braised a pork belly. Also figured there would be a lot of typical soup-type beans so thought I'd do something with edamame instead. Found a base recipe for this on line and looking forward to playing around with it. Hope a lot of LTH'ers are planning to come out to support this great cause!!

My tomato soup was fine, but nothing special, so I'm changing direction and going for a South American-influenced Chicken soup.

    Hi,

I promised to bring bread. I have the impression bread is taken care of via donations. Perhaps I should supply cookies instead?

I'm not sure about the status of the donations--they are going to be working with Nellcote's new bakery operation I think but apparently it's not happening yet. Would you mind reaching out to Martha to find out what, if anything, they'd like us to do?

    Hi all,

Here is the latest from Martha for next week's event:

Hey everybody -- thanks for pitching in with this years' soup season! This week's "theme" is the 3 Bs: Beans, Beer, and Bacon. Go crazy!

Please bring your soups to the Hideout between 5 and 5:30 on Wednesday -- and if you can bring them hot that's a very big plus. We generally ask people to bring 2-3 gallons, but if you've got the capacity to bring more, by all means do! We provide 7 crock pots, as well as ladles, bowls, spoons, etc.

Bread will be provided by La Farine Bakery and Publican Quality Meats.

Lastly, I'm hoping to step up the recipe gathering effort again this year - so if you are moved to send me your soup recipes, please do. I'll post them on our website and I'm also hoping to put together another cookbook down the road, fingers crossed.

Oh, and this week's donations benefit Lakeview Pantry, and our DJ is Sarah Gardiner.

Thanks again, and see you next Wednesday! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with ....

    **************************

Martha said that desserts are welcome but we probably don't need much in the way of bread, unless it's something designed to accompany a specific soup. We are paired with Jody and Beth Osmund from Cedar Valley Farm.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    thanks!

    Jennifer

    Hi all,

We need one more soupmaker!!! The event organizer just let me know that there is another spot to fill so if anyone can pitch in and help, that would be hugely appreciated. Also, we need to get more people out to eat (and donate!!) Contributions go to the Lakeview Pantry, a VERY worthwhile organization that needs our support--so please come out and make a donation and enjoy some fabulous soup from your fellow LTH'ers. Satisfying for the stomach AND the soul :D Finally, please circulate this invitation amongst your non-LTH friends and family--we really need to get a good turnout since we've heard that our LTH nights have been a bit light in the past. thanks!!!!
