    Howdy,

Continuing the multi-year tradition, I plan to bring Will Special sandwiches from Riviera Italian Foods, cut into appetizer size.

Labmom53 will be coming also, her contribution TBD (possibly drinks.)

I just realized that I hadn't posted on this thread. I'll be coming and bringing Caprese Salad On-a-Stick (it is a picnic, after all). The Chow Poodle will be coming also. She's bringing some chocolate chip cookies.

Nice! You can never have too many things on-a-stick at a picnic. The two should complement each other. I can see having one in each hand and alternating bites.

If I'm supposed to be able to update the spreadsheet myself, I'm ignorant and don't know how.

I've been warned that everybody brings their "A" game. Please accept my apologies in advance. I am changing because my "reconstructed elotes" at is still under development and hasn't gotten past "C-" or even "D+". It would be low fat and include a vegan version, more difficult than I thought (and attempting both elotes and esquites).

Changing "elotes" to "reconstructed green tomato pie", normally a side dish, but for the picnic will appear more like an appetizer. Note that the hummus will be my "B" version (I have many) and include minimal dipping items because that is a by-product of the Green tomato pie. Also, and the green tomato pie is still under development, so that is also "B" level now, especially since I don't know how production will scale to the required quantity.

As a newbie, in what serving containers do people bring their items?

    1. fine crystal or hand painted china from specialty stores
    2. Gift quality serving pieces from upscale department stores
    3. Something from K-mart or that other reviled something-mart
    4. A dish intended for casual home use, such as Corning Ware
    5. plain metal pan (possibly disposable) it was cooked in

I'm hoping at least 15% will be #5.

Bring slightly more servings than people RSVPed? Or less as many will be picky and not try everything? Or much more as many show up without RSVPing? Will the RSVPs jump at the last minute? I've already special order purchased the serving units (80) from the bakery, and can't get more easily before the picnic.

How do people label their items? Tent card? Magic Marker on masking tape? What fraction include the recipe?

Don’t be surprised if someone turns it up a notch by creating a ‘pop-up’. Usually food though and not china.

    #4

diversedancer wrote:Bring slightly more servings than people RSVPed?
I usually plan for 4 to 6 full servings.

diversedancer wrote:Or less as many will be picky and not try everything?
Many are not picky and the food always universally delicious but mostly it is tastes of everything.

diversedancer wrote:Or much more as many show up without RSVPing?
There is always a small percentage, kids, guests.

There will be a jump in the last week. Maybe 10%

diversedancer wrote:How do people label their items? Tent card? Magic Marker on masking tape?
There will be labels printed. I usually bring a tent card

diversedancer wrote:What fraction include the recipe?

It's an informal picnic, not a dinner party. Bring your stuff in whatever works best for you. Personally, I always opt for some type of disposable serving dish/container. I usually go to the dollar store and buy something that I plan on leaving behind, either on the table if I leave early or in the trash at the end of the picnic. It's much less hassle. Remember, there will be lots of food set up buffet style. Some people will eat what you brought and some won't, so don't get bogged down in the numbers. Just bring an amount that makes sense to you. If your item runs out, don't worry, there will be lots of other stuff to fill in the gaps.

    HI,

I am usually there from the very beginning to almost the bitter end.

Every year, I go home to look at the picnic thread to find a dish I wanted to try and never knew it was there. Nobody attempts to bring a sample for everyone there.

Think about your stomach space: if 80 people brought 80 full servings, you need stomach capacity rivaling a Nathan's Hot Dog Contestant on the 4th of July.

PantherInTheDen's bacon wrapped whatever may served 6-10. Almost nobody will have a full serving, which they might get at his home. It gets cut up into a bunch of pieces with numerous people tasting to satisfy their curiosity.

People will take food home, too. So it either leaves in their stomach or cooler.

    Hi,

I just called to reconfirm our reservation for the shelter.

Knock on wood: there will be 15 picnic tables.

The dumpster may not be near the shelter. People were complaining about odors from the dumpsters, so they are now closer to the road. They advised to bring garbage bags and plastic garbage cans to help haul to dumpsters as they are filled.

If you wish to recycle, just bring what you need to haul it back home.

Weather suggests a sunny 70 degrees.

I am leaning towards something savory with vegetables, some sort of one-pot.

It will be at a minimum vegetarian, but quite possibly vegan & or gluten-free.

I usually feel strongly pulled to do something specific and I wait for that, but I also usually know what that is by now.
