Warren Belasco, the prominent food historian (the author of Appetite for Change and The Future of Food will be giving a talk at a workshop at Northwestern on Thursday February 15th. The workshop is for a small group of graduate students and faculty, but perhaps a few outside people with special interests might be accomodated.

However, because Warren is one of the great scholars of culinary history, I asked him if he might be willing to join people on this board for lunch on Friday before leaving to head back to Baltimore (he teaches in American Studies at University Maryland Baltimore County). Warren has graciously agreed, and we (along with Cathy2) have selected Sabatino's, a GNR. And what place could be better for the author of "The Future of Food"? (Moto does not serve lunch!)

So the plan is lunch at noon on February 16th at Sabatino's. Granted this is early notice, and I will place a reminder as the date gets closer, but some people might wish to reserve the date on their calendar.

Is he part of the team behind the documentary also titled "The Future of Food" (www. thefutureoffood.com)? The film explores the topic that is similar to what Warren Belasco is going to talk about: GMO foods, labeling issues, etc.

By the way, if you're interested in the future of food production, the film is pretty educational. It's rather appalling to find out more about the business practices of these agro-tech companies. Also, there's a recent editorial in the current issue of the scientific journal Natureabout how we must decide on the level of transgenic or GMO crops we are willing to tolerate in our diet. It is kind of sad that it seems unrealistic to demand zero GMO foods in our diet in the future. Check it out!

From looking at the website, my guess is that Belasco is not directly involved in the film, but the issues raised by the film are the issues that Belasco analyzes in his book.

I'd like to attend as well, Gary, assuming that there is still room.
