Let's carry out from the Captain and feast near the shore at Illinois Beach State Park.
It's a GNR Nominee and if you haven't had a chance to feast on his fried shrimp or enjoyed the some of the best BBQ outside of the city, join us for a picnic. Saturday is supposed to be beautiful, about 75F and sunny.

Illinois Beach State Park is at Wadsworth Road and Sheridan Road in Zion, IL.
Figure we'll order around noon, set up around 12:30. If we get a big crowd, I might suggest moving to the park's North Unit at 17th St (about three miles north) -- there are some nice picnic pavillions up there.

I don't have a menu handy (I'll work on that), but it might be worth us ordering ahead of time if there's more than a few of us.

Swimming in Lake Michigan late September? It all depends on the wind direction. It's a nice walk on the beach even if you don't use the water.

    Hi,

It pains me I will be out of town on Saturday. A combo of great fried shrimp, a bit of BBQ and Illinois State Park is a great vacation for a day.

    Regards,

Hmmm... I'm sorry to see nobody else is joining us so far, hopefully there will be some last-minute decisions to drive up near the Wisconsin border -- perhaps on the way to outlet malls?

In any case, I plan to find a picnic table or three at the main part of the park. Look for a blue Chevy Malibu, hopefully I'll remember to put an LTHForum sign on the trunk or the rear window. As you come into the park, you'll pass the nature center, then the lodge as you make the turn. Beyond that will be the beach on the right, and picnic areas on the left. I'll pick a spot not too far down, if I can get parking.

If you showed up after 1:15, well, you missed Sue and I.

A fine lunch was had -- we split a Combo of Pork Shoulder and Fried Shrimp, pretty much as I've described previously.
We also had an order of fried wild mushrooms. Absolultely delicious for somewhere in the $3-$4 range. Big chunks of a couple varieties hand battered and fried. Tender on the inside, crunchy on the outside.

Beautiful afternoon for a walk on the beach, water was almost warm enough for a swim.
