I had a great time at this event yesterday. Approximately 300 people showed up, not just for the 90-lb. pig, but also for the fresh-picked veggies, farm tours, jazz, and much conviviality.

And it truly was a dog day afternoon – many brought their pets, and got a chance to run them through an agility course.

But if it’s called a “Big Pig Gig,” there’s got to be a big pig.

Pig coming out of La Caja China roasting box. Went in at 4 a.m., served at 2 p.m.

The pig was served several ways:

    Image
    Tenderloin, with fresh corn salsa

    Image
Pulled pork, with house-made barbeque sauce

Not shown: unsauced pulled pork with a variety of sauces on the side

    Crispy pork cracklins

A small sampling of many other offerings:

    Image
Fresh-picked, grilled corn on the cob

    Image
    Wheatberry salad

    Image
    Garlic roasted potatoes

    Image
A very rich Mac ‘n Cheese

    Image
    Zucchini with fresh cheese

    Image
Vinaigrette-based cole slaw, with grilled chicken and super-sweet Sunglo tomatoes in the background

All the vegetables were grown on the farm. That freshness contributed to the overall deliciousness of the afternoon. And all that food, at $25 per person, was quite a deal.

Full disclosure: My cousin is the executive director at the farm, and her brother was the jazz keyboard player. Despite the familial connections, I paid my own way.
