Edgewater GRally - Saturday, September 19, 2009 (Pictures)

I stopped at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church at Glenwood and Granville this afternoon, for the Edgewater GRally – a quintessentially Chicago block party, with a bike parade and all-around good fun . . . and food.

There was an entry “donation” of $10 which entitled you to any one of a half-dozen sandwiches prepared and sold at “Gert’s Café,” a tent situated next to the church. Though I’d intended to have a brat with the glass of Shiner bock beer I had in hand, once I saw the burgers grilling over charcoal I changed my mind. Smokey taste with a nice char on the meat, dressed with some onion, relish and giardiniere.

Broadway Cellars



Broadway Cellars was one of at least three “neighborhood” restaurants selling food, featuring pulled pork sandwiches. I was tempted to have one of the sandwiches, until I learned the meat is prepared/sold to the restaurant by a supplier – and not fixed in-house.

That Little Mexican Café was the second of the three neighborhood restaurants I spotted.

Indie Cafe



Indie Café – Chicken Curry



The Indie Café booth quickly caught my attention and seemed to be the busiest of the three neighborhood restaurants represented. The fragrant chicken curry quickly caught my attention. The coconut flavor/scent was enticing and when I ate it there was an explosion of flavors in my mouth and it was the best of that variety of curry I've eaten in a long time.

Beer and wine were both available for purchase.

This was the 2nd Annual Edgewater GRalley, a one-day-only event (9-19-09).
