Chicago Craft Beer Week Schedule of events for today, May 20 2010

    Moonshine Celebrates Craft Beer
    Moonshine Restaurant & Brewery

In honor of American Craft Beer Week, a nation-wide celebration of the art of craft brewing, Moonshine Restaurant & Brewery will showcase its new lineup of house brews by pairing them with delicious new dishes. The featured brew of the week will be a brand new, highly anticipated wheat beer, “Hymie Weiss,” aptly named after Al Capone’s bitter gangster rival! They say it’s “a beer you’ll kill for”!

This is a great chance for beer lovers to toast craft brewing and to commemorate the advanced beer culture here in Chicago,” says Moonshine chef Matt Wilde. The “mother of all beers weeks,” American Craft Beer Week is the largest national effort focusing on American craft brewers.

Moonshine has recently implemented a fully-operational in-house brewery, spearheaded by Brewmaster Bob Kittrell. The house-brew list consists of six diverse, hand-crafted beers, each priced at $5.

The book (published by Lake Claremont Press) includes reviews of the Top 100 most historic bars, taverns, nightclubs, lounges, dives, and bierstubes in Chicago. Many entries in the book serve craft beers and the book itself celebrates historic bars, just as ale aficionados (like Sean) celebrate craft beers.

Within the covers of this book, you’ll learn the stories behind Chicago’s best nightspots: how they came to be, their intertwining histories, uniqueness, celebrity clientele, and their place within the culture of the great city of Chicago. We even threw in the most historic suburban bars, taverns we miss the most, and do-it-yourself historic pub crawls.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Event at Guthries Tavern

Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest features fresh hops from New Zealand, where fall happens during our spring. These fresh whole-cone hops are picked, dried, and shipped to the brewery within days of the harvest. Tasting Notes: Toasty, caramel-like malts with a fresh hop flavor of peppery spice, and lemon with rose-like aromas.

The Southern Hemisphere features fresh Pacific Hallertau, New Zealand Motueka and New Zealand Southern Cross hops, all from New Zealand. The fresh hops in this beer are dried right after being picked then shipped immediately to Chico for brewing so that they retain their peak aromatics and flavors. To ensure the freshest hops possible, we went to the added expense of flying these hops from New Zealand to Chico so we could brew with them the week after they were picked.

The Best Bitter Ale is brewed using imported English malts and hops, this medium-bodied, copper-colored beer is a great rendition of the popular English beer style. Our Best Bitter is a very drinkable yet flavorful ale. Also available will be Pale Ale and Porter bottles.
