I've judged many beer (both homebrew & commercial) competitions and done a few small, informal rib competitions along the lines of KCBS, but this will be my first KCBS sanctioned competition as a certified BBQ judge. (I took the CBJ class in Westmont earlier this year.)

    LTH,

Thought I was going to judge Westmont, was an alternate, checked in with the Judge Liaison who said I would be judging. After an hour for them to get started, waiting in a hot tent, I lost my place in a weird KCBS version of musical chairs. This experience has done nothing to enhance my already shaky opinion of KCBS contests.

That said, not judging gave me time to hang out with Merrill, Nancy, Buzz, Phil, Matt and Bill. I tasted Merrill's brisket, it was excellent, and Phil/Buzz/Matt's pork, very tasty, well deserved calls to the stand on their part. Nice to see other LTHers as well including jpreiser and, damn, I forgot his LTH user name. (sorry)

No problem. I think that was me or my buddy Josh, who is inter4alia on LTH. Inter4alia was the white dude, and I was the big-boned Indian dude. Sorry you didn't get to judge with us. That was very strange how they booted you after you'd already checked in.

Jpreiser, was the you who I sat next to at the judging table? We talked beer clubs for a little bit?

Good to see LTH represented fairly well at the competition!

I got back from Westmont a couple of hours ago. I was going to be judging the competition, but never got a chance too because of the weather. About 10 minutes before we were to get our first round of turn-ins (the chicken), the organizers put everything on hold because of potential 70mph winds, which they thought were headed our way. When I say they put everything hold, I mean everything. The cooks were told to hold off on turning in their food until further notice. Us judges were sent off to shelters for cover. Many of us went to our respective vehicles, whereas some went to shelters which were set up by the organizers. Although that first gush of winds/storms did not come through, about an hour later, another was on the horizon with no certainty as to when things would resume. That's when I had to call it quits and leave because of family obligations in the afternoon.

I would really be interested in hearing from someone who was competing in the event. Philw? Anyone else? How did you handle the situation? What were you told? Having competed in a few KCBS competitions with fellow LTH'r inter4alia, I could imagine the complications this caused for the cooks, and I'm very curious to find out the details from the cooks' side.

i thought it was handled bad.
we had chicken in the box wolking it up to the judges tent. & the judges are walking out of the tent.
and all we heard was that someone had told the reps to seek shelter.
so that through a wench in the works.
but for all ,had same problem.
so we got turned in @ 2pm with chicken & so on .
got a 4th place call in pork

    62 teams this year

Phil - again nice showing considering the weather and ridiculous hold ups at the judging tent......wonder who made that dumb decision ..ive cooke din all kinds of weather and short of a visible tornado Ive never seen turn in times or anything else for that matter held up..what time did awards start..9 PM? :)

in fact I was out all day yesterday cooking BBQ under my canopy for family ..lots of rain thunder and lightning but NO wind..so what exactly prompted them to evacuate the judging tent ?
