In a previous thread, we suddenly realized there were some avid Scrabble enthusiasts among us! So I suggested getting together to nibble and play a round or two. Boudreaulicious proposed meeting at Northdown Café* in Roscoe Village.

    Basic Rules:
This is open to everybody, no matter how good or bad you are.
I'd like to have at least 4 people signed up. I have a board, but if there are more people interested, please offer up more boards so we don't have to play in teams.
CrazyC suggested that food-related words get extra points. Maybe double word score, on top of whatever extra points the Scrabble board awards?
All other basic rules of Scrabble apply: no proper names/words, abbreviations, foreign words not in typical American lexicon or food-related. (Zapato is illegal, queso is not.)

    Players:
    Pie Lady
Octarine (+dictionary and possibly a board)
    boudreaulicious (+possible board)
    Siun +1
    mcanna
    earthlydesire

*Oh my god, they have pie!

Swim Cafe is also a good place, so if this works out, we can meet there in the future. ScoutMob has a coupon deal today: a free coupon for 50% off. http://scoutmob.com/chicago/today/2011-10-03

So are you planning on using the OWL or OSPD dictionary? My friends generally use SOWPODS as it gives you more options.

I don't actually have anything besides a general dictionary, so I'm open to any of those.

I can bring a Scrabble dictionary and an Onyx edition board. The onyx is black so it's much less likely we'll end up getting tiles mixed up :)

SO excited about this :D I have a board--it's ugly and ancient but serviceable.
Do you want me to talk to them about saving us a space in the back room? Since it's a Sunday, we should probably confirm that.

    and the pie is GOOD!!

But that's just the name we picked. I figured we couldn't do this without a proper name.

    Hey there, welcome aboard!
It's not too late to sign up. So far we have 5 or 6 people coming, which means we can have a group of 3 and a group of 2-3. But I'm sure the numbers will increase closer to the date.

Okay - It looks like we have 6-7 people coming, which means two teams of 3-4 each.
Octarine - you were the first to offer, so would you mind bringing your dictionary and spare board? If not, I'll ask the next person in line.
I'll bring legal pads to write down scores.

Can't wait to see you all there!

As for the rules, I think we should stick to the rule of only one word per turn even if it's food related — so queso fresco wouldn't count. Thoughts?

I just called Northdown (had forgotten all about this  ) and they don't take reservations but said it shouldn't be any problem to get a couple of tables in the back at that time. I will likely be running late because I have another event that doesn't end til 1:00 but I'll try to leave early.

On the subject of rules -- I think we should play scrabble the regular way BUT...maybe a bonus added for a culinary related word.

Not a bingo bonus but maybe an extra chunk of points...

I'm not sure what you mean by only one word per turn -- but I'm a purist so I think it should only be one word per turn and not hyphenated.

    My 2 centavos.

No worries on being late. For those who haven't met me, I'll be the one with the big ears eating pie.

    Play well!

So sorry I had to miss it! Had to finish school grades and handle my centenarian mom.

Hope all played well and had a good time, remembering words like quince, quinoa and mozzarella to boost point values...and that the pie at Northdown was worth it.

Please let me know when the Scrapple team meets next.

What a great idea! Chouxfly and I had a lot of fun, and it was so nice to hang out with Octarine, LauraC and Pie Lady (and we had another join us right as we were leaving... Fifi? So sorry we couldn't stay longer to get to know you!).

I was not thrilled with the venue, though. My eyes had a hard time with the low light, the music (while it did improve) was too loud, and the food was meh (my burger came out with an unwanted egg on it, and Chouxfly's biscuit was thoroughly burned). The service was OK, but taking the other things into account, perhaps a quieter, better-lit place could be found? (I believe Octarine suggested someplace in Evanston?)

Is this going to be monthly? We'd love to do it again, what a terrific idea!

(Oh, and some of the food-related words -- a 10-point bonus -- included decanters, durum, congealed, burnt, chub, and za. Anyone remember any others?)

Thanks all for coming! And thanks to Fifille and Octarine, who let me eat some of their supertasty fries. The pie was disappointing...it was all right, but not worth the $8. Their coffee kept me wide awake for hours.

It was nice meeting you, LauraC! Though I was beaten in all three games, I look forward to the next tourney.

I would be up for that Irish joint in Evanston. I also found my coupon to Swim Cafe - 50% off, up to $10. Any place is okay with me. Does anyone want to "host" the next one?
