“For the Accommodation of the Ladies”:
Gender and Public Dining in Nineteenth-Century New York City
    with Cindy R. Lobel

    Wednesday, December 14, 2011
106 East 86th Street (between Park and Lexington)
    7:00 pm Check-in and reception | 7:30 pm Presentation

This illustrated talk will explore the universe of ladies’ restaurants in nineteenth-century New York City. Our “tour” will include the first confectionaries that opened for ladies in the early 1800s; the sumptuous ice creameries; the ladies’ dining rooms in New York’s luxury hotels; and the respectable restaurants that served ladies and families by the end of the nineteenth century. Along the way, we will discuss the interplay between gender and social class in the public dining spaces of the burgeoning metropolis.

Cindy R. Lobel is an Assistant Professor of History at Lehman College of the City University of New York. Trained in United States history, she is a specialist in the history of New York City and American urban history. She is currently completing a book on the impact of urbanization on foodways and eating patterns in nineteenth-century New York City, tentatively entitled The Appetite of the Metropolis: Food, Eating, and Culture in Nineteenth-Century New York City.

Refreshments will be served at the reception, including sweet and savory pastries, Pierre Blot's madeleines, and festive tea sandwiches.
