    Hi,

My friends at the MGFM are again holding their pie baking contest (3rd annual) and it's taking place on Saturday 6/29 at 11:00 (entries must be turned in by 10:45). Again, I've been asked to judge the competition and I'm looking forward to seeing how moving this event from September to June this year affects the entries. It should be a very interesting batch of pies. If you're are baker -- and I know some of you definitely are -- I hope you'll consider entering the competition. If you are interested, here is a link to the rules:

If you're not a baker, I still hope you'll come by, shop/support the market and say hello. Slices of all the entries will be sold after the competition and the proceeds will be donated to the Niles Township Food Pantry.

    See you next Saturday!

Maybe around noon but I really don't know for sure. I will try to find out.

Between 11:30 and noon is a pretty safe estimate as to when slices of the competing pies will be sold off.

Regarding the sale of slices/pies, since each entrant is required to bake 2 pies, after the contest is over, it's possible that some pies will be sold as whole pies -- if the request is made early enough -- while the remainder of the ones the judges taste will be sold by the slice.

    Prizes are as follows:

    1st place - $50, a ribbon and two books

    2nd place - $25, a ribbon and one book

    3rd place - $15, a ribbon and one book

Proceeds from the sale of the slices/pies will go to the Niles Township Food Pantry, a most worthy cause.

I hope to see a few LTHer's at the MGFM tomorrow. A few folks have already told me they'll be there -- and stevez is also judging the contest -- but no one has committed to baking pies. I think this competition is wide open . . . :)

I had a lovely time at the MGFM on Saturday. The weather wasn't perfect but it was pleasantly cool and the rain stayed away, so it was just what it needed to be. Between our home garden and our CSA we have plenty of produce at home, so we didn't make any purchases but we arrived early, so we could walk the market, and we had a very nice time . . .

Here's where the pies were accumulated as they were turned in by those competing. We judges were asked to judge them on appearance, along with other attributes.

    Competing Pies
Each competitor was required to make 2 pies, so the 2nd pie from each set was placed in the shed, aka Pie Central. I actually thought this was a better place to view the pies, since the ones in the shed were not covered with plastic wrap.
