Some of the members of this board know of the Nosh Walks tours in New York City, led by the intrepid Myra Alperson. Now she is extending into events that are similar to (although different from) some of LTH events, and for our New York visitors, I wanted to share her plans for a set of dinners in (obscure, but good) ethnic restaurants in New York. I would certainly go were I located in New York with no LTH to rely upon. My guess is that you could participate even if you haven't been on a Noshwalks tour, email Myra and ask. This is part of the email that I received for an event at a Yemeni restaurant:
Myra Alperson:
It occurred to me, after seeing one restaurant in particular quite recently, that it would be fun to organize occasional dinners at some of these places - destinations most of us probably wouldn't go to on our own but would gladly visit with friends. And so I've decided to form a new program called Dining Out With Noshwalks.
The first will take place this Friday evening, October 11, at Oasis restaurant in the Van Nest section of the Bronx. Oasis is a new, impressive looking ploace with a comprehensive menu of Mediterranean and Yemeni dishes. Van Nest, which I include in two of my Bronx Noshwalks, is what I would call an "emerging" neighborhood with a presence of markets, eateries and other shops representing a community of people from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. Nearby, incidentally, is the wonderful Conti Bakery, which has been in Van Nest for over 90 years. So there's old and new in one place!
We would share the price of common dishes, tax and tip - you would pay for your beverage and any personal orders you wish to make in addition to shared orders. I will take care of reservations.
If you are interested, here's what to do:
1) Be someone who has taken Noshwalks in the past
2) Register online with
http://www.noshwalks.com (it's on the schedule!). The fee is just $5.
3) I will contact you with the exact address and meeting time.
Five seats are already taken. I plan to top it off at 8 or 10.
At this first dinner, we will share our experiences and decide if this will continue. If so, look forward to more Dining Out with Noshwalks ("DOWN Dinners"?) in the future!

Toast, as every breakfaster knows, isn't really about the quality of the bread or how it's sliced or even the toaster. For man cannot live by toast alone. It's all about the butter. -- Adam Gopnik
