Christopher Kimball at North Shore Center on 9/28

Hi- I was just on North Shore Center for the Performing Art's website, and I noticed that Christopher Kimball is going to be there on 9/28. There are lots of tickets available. For those people who want to spring for the most expensive tickets which are $95, that price includes a meet and greet with him after his show, and a copy of his latest cookbook, which he will sign for you. Does anybody know if they lower the price of the tickets a few days before hand? The tickets start at $45. Here is the link.

Hi- I just looked on Goldstar, and they currently have reduced tickets for tomorrow for the Jewish play they are currently doing at North Shore, and so closer to the night Christopher Kimball is there, they might have reduced tickets too. They do charge a service fee for tickets purchased through Goldstar though. While I was on their site, I noticed that they have lawn seats half price for Ravinia for Monday for the Punch Brothers with Chris Thile. They are $13.50 for the lawn seats, but they charge a $4.25 service fee. Ravinia charges a $12 service fee if you purchase tickets by phone or off their website.

Chris Thile is going to be performing at North Shore this fall too, as is Garrison Keillor. I wish I could afford to go to all of the shows. Hope this helps, Nancy

I just checked, and there are still tons of tickets available for Christopher Kimball. I highly suspect that you will be able to get half price tickets on Goldstar or some where else in a few weeks. Garrison is almost sold out though. There are only about 10 seats left. Hope this helps, Nancy

Hi- I just checked, and there are still tons of tickets left for this. It takes place tomorrow evening. Only about 10% of the seats in the balcony have been sold. I just checked on Goldstar, and they do not have discounted tickets for this program. Anybody know of any other discounted tickets for this?

I saw his new book when I was in Barnes and Noble a few days ago, but I did not look at it. Apparently he has a new tv show on PBS that is going to start soon too, and he has a radio program on PBS. None of the PBS stations around here are broadcasting it though. Thanks, Nancy

It's not that I don't like CK; I do. But this is one of those events where even if they paid me to attend, I'd skip it.

WTTW is carrying the TV show ("Christopher Kimball's Milk Street Kitchen," lest you get it confused) on Saturday afternoons. I've caught one episode so far. The format is very similar to ATK/Cook's Country with a cheaper set, hipper kitchen staff, and a somewhat more global purview. Given that the enterprise is only a year old, it's not a surprise that there's a lot of overlap between the magazine, the show, and the cookbook, quite a bit of it borrowed (with attribution) from other chefs, including Fuchsia Dunlop. I recognize a lot of techniques from Cooks Illustrated recipes, too.

I'm not surprised that CK has ramped up the marketing machine as quickly as he has with this venture, but it feels a bit half-baked to me at this point.

His TV show is airing on WTTW Saturdays at 4pm, not sure if the radio show is being broadcast anywhere in the area but it is available as a podcast.

Ronnie, why do you say that? I was curious to hear him speak, if there were cheap tickets, but now I wonder what you know that I don't!

Hi- I was just on Amazon, and his Milk Street cookbook has gotten mostly good reviews. Somebody that only gave it three stars though reported that all the recipes were only in metric? I find that hard to believe. Apparently a lot of the recipes in the book have appeared in the magazine, and so I don't know how useful the book would be if you already subscribe to the magazine.

I will have to look for the tv show. I have not seen the new ATK shows either. As far as I know WBEZ never broadcasts any cooking shows such as the Splendid Table. For a while there, the only program I was listening to on WBEZ was Prairie Home Companion. Now when I am in my car, I will listen to All Things Considered. Thanks, Nancy

It's just the nature of the event that no longer interests me. There was a time when something like this would have been of interest. But the market is completely and utterly saturated. I can get beyond my fill of listening to CK (and others) discussing culinaria (on demand in many cases) without having to burn an evening to do so. And beyond that, paying for it just seems insane to me. And if someone said "we'll give you $20 to attend," I'd think I'd probably decide that having that particular evening free would be worth more to me than the $20.

Folks who know me know I adore Kimball's stuff.

I went last year. I don't have to go again. If you are asking for reviews, buy a subscription to Milk Street instead. I have been super pleased with pretty much everything I have made from scrambled eggs, carrot salad, to hummus, pies, tarts, cookies, and cakes.
