Despite the constant prodding from the minions at yesterday's LTHNLG outing at Monica's, I kept my cool and kept the November destination under wraps. China Chef needs no introduction. Lots of LTH Love here - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11132&p=507461

Since China Chef is dangerously close to ELG territory and some of the ELG folks have already jumped over to the other side, I've decreed that the November gathering will be a joint meeting between the two groups. As Esteemed Coordinator, I am Grand Poobah for the lunch.

Please join us on the 14th for some Jewish American Chinese delicacies. Perhaps some of the Evanstonians might creep west of the Edens to join us. No passport or membership cards required. 8)

I hope this month goes better for you too, Cathy.

I would like to come. It's on the "hidden" section of Lincoln, meaning not the major thoroughfare part.

I note that Google calls China Chef "Simple setting for Filipino Food" as if the "china" only referred to the serving dishes.

Eating the "right" foods, even though I ate a large quantity yesterday at Monica's, my weight was DOWN 1.4 pounds today, not up. The meal was filling enough I didn't have dinner except some mostly raw nuts as a snack while driving to a dance.

My old stomping grounds! I'm in...

Since the demise of Kow Kow (and Ah Fong, Bamboo House, Pekin House, et al), and other venues serving that indescribable, oft-debated variety called 'Jewish-American' Chinese food, China Chef is in my estimation the best of what's left. Yum.

I'd like to join you, but with a new roommate I can't turn my back on for more than 90 minutes, China Chef (like Wells Brothers) is too far a drive for me right now. I'll have to catch up with you folks later.

I hope to make it (I never seem to know what my schedule will bring).

Besides the many traditional favorites, let's not forget that China Chef has an extensive and varied menu. I was there recently on a whim and had the clams with black bean garlic sauce which was tasty. Wife No. 1 had one of the shrimp dishes (can't recall which one) which was decent.

When I ordered the clam dish I had the sense that the veteran waiter approved my choice.

So am I to assume that this "honorary" card is attempting to relegate us to a second class status in your group? Thank God that I still have my older cards which elevated me to the level of "proud member." Just remember that the revolutionary spirit that is heating up the North group could spread south, though I dont know if it is possible to revolt against an anarchic organization.

Hey, what are those LTHers who have occasionally attended BOTH meet ups supposed to do? Where do we sit? I’m know for a fact that I am not the only one faced with a “difficult” decision.
I recall seeing EddieK at the Pequod’s lunch in the fall of 2017. That sure was a mixed group at Avli Estiatorio in late summer of 2016 as well as Boston Fish Market picnic style lunch in July of 2014 and the joint meet up at Tava in January of that year. All the Barnaby pizzas have been shared by members of both groups.
We have somehow managed to get along and find a seat when our appetites are guiding us so while I am hopeful this lunch will also be peaceful and satisfying, I think I will hedge my bet by getting there early so I won’t have to choose.

I always choose to sit with the 'new people'.

After all I see the 'old people' on a regular basis.

Last time there--a good 5 years ago--the Filipino delight pancit guisado was on the lunch menu. Very solid indeed.

Maybe the esteemed coordinators could get together and designate tables for spicy/medium/mild as I suspect that is a likely significant preference selection, or in addition or alternatively, tables for vegetarians/vegans, "no seafood", or other preferences.

Or did I miss something and it will be set up as a buffet (another solution to the spice level issue).

There is no spicy here, or if there is, I've yet to discover it over my dozens of visits.

There are dishes that are 'spicy', but I don't believe that I've ever encountered a sauce that was actually hot here. Ordering something 'spicy' means that they add whole red peppers to a dish as they saute it; these peppers are easily eaten around.

And I'm in for 1 [sorta kinda tentative....]

BTW, given how large this crowd is, some of all y'all may want to opt for street parking. Their lot is pretty small. And the strip mall to the east has lots of signs about towing....
