OK, we are living around North & Damen and I'm eagerly searching for an independent coffee shop with high quality espresso. Must be walkable and ideally with wifi for me to avoid work :)

Try Caffe de Luca first, unless you already have.

    jpschust,

If Caffe de Luca works for you, and you need another reason besides wifi to avoid work, there's also a branch of the Public Square's Cafe Society that meets at CdL on Thursday evenings. Since I moved out of Logan Square, I haven't been able to attend, but it's a great group of people who gather to discuss current events/issues in the news. At one of the most memorable meetings for me, Stanley Fish was the facilitator. I used to head over right after work and eat dinner during the discussion.

The very title of this thread, never mind the actual discussion, is total proof Wicker Park is no longer cool.

I'm getting really sick of this dumb hipster argument. It's elitist and rediculous.

Wicker Park stopped being cool when you found out about it.

I can't believe Leticia's isn't named in this thread. They are more on the sweets and savories side, but they do serve coffee and tea as well (and I was a customer when there wasn't the wine bar part of the place!)

    Anyway --

I found out about it in 1986 when one could still get a stool at the Busy Bee. *That* was a cool, indie coffee shop with cool kielbasa.

When that closed, and all the corporate places opened, and the gentrification became so ruthless---McMansions utterly displacing the locals block by blocks, then yes, Wicker Park became that UNCOOL. I would date this sometime between the film releases Singles and Reality Bites---both notorious for Tobacco Company product placement. And so there became nothing more annoying to me than dealing with booger-nosed wannabe GenX poseurs smoking in all the eating houses of WP and Bucktown and UK Village. So, let's say, since 1993, I've felt less and less reason to spend time or money there. I find it much worse than even Lincoln Park: It *is* Lincoln Park for the Winona Ryder generation. Why can't those defending it admit it? Or name ONE irreplaceable place in the area?
