So at my holiday party Saturday night, I broke out the new Jones Soda 4-pack of Hanukkah flavors, packaged with a plastic dreidel.
The flavors were, as to be expected, hit and miss:
Applesauce: Pretty darn good. Sweeter than the Mexican apple sodas, maybe a hint of vanilla (I expected perhaps some cinnamon). ****
Jelly Doughnut: Not being Sephardic, this flavor isn't traditional for my family's Festival of Lights. But it was a somewhat light fruit punch, maybe red cream soda. It reminded me of "Red Pop," one of the two flavors of soda that were Kosher (perhaps Kosher fo Passover) at Jewish holidays at my great grandma's when I was very little (the other being "Green Pop") ***
Chocolate Coin: I was hoping for something more Chocolate Phosphate, but that's hard to replicate in something you can't stir. As it is, it's a darn sight better than, say Canfield's Diet Chocolate stuff. It's got a caramelly note, not too far off from Hershey's syrup. It definitely doesn't match milk chocolate coins, but it's pretty good. **+1/2
Latke: Hey, my latkes don't taste like wet cardboard. This was the "take one for the team" bottle, and of the four, it's the only one with anything left, and half the 12-oz bottle's still there. Nobody lasted more than a sip. Negative 1 *
