My buddies and I have been playing hockey at Midway Plaisance. We don't live in the neighborhood but we have been talking about heading out for a local post-hockey beer. We are all fans of the local shot and beer corner taverns. Can anyone lead us in the right direction? Thanks!

Woodlawn Tap (aka Jimmy's) is pretty much the quintessential Hyde Park/U of C shot-and-beer bar--it's a legend in the area. There's also Cove Lounge, also down on 55th Street. Woodlawn Tap is more studenty and Cove Lounge has more of a mix of locals, with a few students thrown in. Jimmy's has typical bar food, Cove does not serve food. The drinks at the Cove are a bit cheaper than Woodlawn Tap, but they both have that local tavern/divey feel to them. Given what you're looking for, I think these two will do fine for you. Don't expect anything fancier than a Guinness or Sam Adams on tap at these places, although I know the Cove (and probably Woodlawn Tap, too) has a few microbrews in bottles.

Can definitely recommend Jimmy's. I haven't been but a friend lives in Hyde Park and that is his local.

We went to Jimmy's last night...definitely the kind of place we were looking for. Thanks again!

Also the U of C Pub in the basement of Ida Noyes Hall (59th and Woodlawn) is a very enjoyable spot. Great beer selection -- perhaps the best on the South Side -- and all for $5-6/pint. Full of U of C'ers, but when in Rome...

Mondays are cheap wing nights, Tuesdays have one of the best trivia competitions in the city, it being the U of C and all.

The U of C pub probably has the best selection of beers on the South Side (at least the best selection I've seen so far), but I didn't mention it because you need to be with someone with a U of C ID to get into the pub. And it's $3 admission for non-affiliated folks. And they don't do shots (although over the last year or so they've brought in liquor for mixed-drinks. They absolutely will not serve you that liquor straight-up.)

Admissions are charged even for affiliated folks, actually, unless you have a membership, which is 15 bucks, I believe, and limited to students and alumni. Guests are never a problem, however, though they pay the same amount.

It is a good beer bar--I have quaffed many a pint there over a book and some guac, or with friends. It's rather more expensive than Jimmy's, but utterly worth it, especially compared to other establishments across the city. Between those two, most any Hyde Parker should be pleased--I know I am.
